Large Gateway

I like to keep my eye on the scouting and boy scouts categories at SketchUp's 3d warehouse, and I picked up this gateway there today:

J. van Beijnen modelled it and says that it was based on a photo on the Dutch Scouting forum. Download the model here.

  1. Nice to see my model back on the Ropes and Poles weblog!
It's because of the tutorials on this weblog that I made it. Thanks for making them availeble! I will probably use them (together with the other nice ideas and articles on the site) for our own Scoutingtroop in the future.

The gateway was indeed modeled after a picture on the dutch Scoutingforum. There are a lot of nice pioneering objects on this forum. Expecialy in the following topic: http://www.scoutingforum.nl/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1858
You probably cant understand a thing that is beeing said, but the pictures and foto's could be nice to view.

If you want to look for more pioneering onjects on the forum, you could try searching ("Zoeken" in Dutch) the forum using "pionieren" (pioneering in Dutch) as keyword.

  2. Thanks for the info jeroen- I have bookmarked the the thread from scoutingforum.nl to post about properly when I have time. There are some really interesting projects there, and my Afrikaans lets me understand at least a little bit of what is being said (although Dutch and Afrikaans spelling are two very different things- alles lyk vir my baie vreemd)

    thanks again,
    YiS

  3. Hello Peter,

It would be nice to see the Scoutingforum on your weblog (if there are some parts you want translated, you can always ask us).
I took the liberty of making a special post about pioneering in Sketchup on the Scoutingforum and made some links to your weblog and the Sketchup tutorials (http://www.scoutingforum.nl/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4994). I hope this is ok with you.
I think a lot of Dutch scouts will realy appreciate you're weblog. We've got a lot of groups who are very much in to pioniering and will probably put the information on your weblog to good use ;)

  4. Thanks for sharing my site, I don't mind at all (I don't pay for
bandwidth, so the more traffic, the better). I am really busy at the
moment, so I can't write about all the things I want to-so many things
looked interesting- the high table, the high toilet, the 'Asterix'
village, the Flintstones car, the windmill, the stadium. But I am very
interested in one of the projects on the thread you linked to- it is of
a long monkey bridge, made with a whole lot of bridges built between
rafts. I think someone mentioned something about a world record. Can you
tell me more about that bridge? Thank you. Our scout camp site is next
to a lake, so I was thinking of something like that as part of the
    centenary celebrations next year.

  5. Hello Peter,

I'm sorry but I don't know anything more about the record bridge than is said in te post.

It was a record attempt in 1985 (before I even knew how to tie my shoes). They build a V-shaped bridge with a lengt of 220 meters using 8 rafts with a tripod (with 4 poles, I don't know the correct english term) on them.
From the two pictures you should be able to get a good overview of there construction.

I'm sorry I can't help you with more details about the bridge. But I guess you probably will be able to use the pictures to come up with a nice design.

    YiS,

    Jeroen
